First trip of the season today, beautiful spring day with a sprinkle of LDO's, more steady hatch at the bottom of beat with one fish rising, turned out to be 10" BT taken on LDO emerger. No other fish seen or hooked.

Out again today, Dunscombe Bridge, one fish rising at the bottom of the beat in an impossible lie due to crap hanging as cover for its lie, the crap is no longer there, maybe the fish will still be there as it is underneath a tree! Waded the rest of water up to Dunscombe Bridge with no sign of a rise, only a few LDO's coming off. Above the bridge while standing in ankle deep water having rescued my flies from a bush, there was a flurry of LDO's and rising fish, changed to an emerger, this was ignored, changed to extended body Jingler, took first cast, 8" BT. Very cold now so went back downstream and fished a deep pool with heavy a nymph and hooked a 12" BT. Called it a day and went to see HT in the shop for a cup of tea and a natter about the weekends Rugby.

First casts of the season today on a "friendly farmers" section of the Yeo. Cold downstream wind but 14 WBT caught ( 12 on nymph and two on dry klink) mostly small fish but with 2 @ 9". The real reason for my post was that I saw my first ever otter swim down past me ( infact I saw a line of bubbles across the river from me and then a dark shape in the water materialised into an otter ). Are these a rare sight on the Yeo? And does anyone know how they might or might not affect the fishing?

They are not a frequent sight, but as we tend to keep different hours to them this is not surprising. Along with mink I have seen them on the Yeo/Creedy and Taw, found signs of them on the Culm, but most of my sightings have been on the Exe in Exeter. As for disturbing fish I always remember coming up to a pool on the Taw and a large dog otter came out of the bank and proceeded to do his absolutions with fish rising above him, he then slipped into the pool which then went dead, so I just sat there and within 20 mins the fish were up and rising again and I caught three of them, so as with any disturbance you just have to give it time, if the fish aren't feeding, a school of otters wouldn't change anything.

mojo, it is amazing how quickly the fish "come back on" despite major disturbances. I suppose it is because once the threat/danger/disturbance has passed the trout is keen to get back into its prime position before it is taken by a competitor.
I was working last week and we watched a mink swim right through a pool we were standing in yet we still caught a fish pretty much from where the mink had passed through about 5 minutes later. It was a nice fish too.

Out again today, Salmon Hutch, a fair few LDO's coming off only takers were Robins, Dippers, Wagtails and Warblers, had 4 fish from 8" to 12" on deep nymphs in 2.5 hrs, downstream wind was a curse, but definite signs of things looking up. Good luck to those of you who will be out there over the holiday.

Frustrating trip on the Yeo today. Plenty of fish hooked but they just wouldn't stay on! Nice wbt of about 11" ( on nymph) but at least a dozen fell off! Three in a row at one point. Note to self, remember to take hook sharpener next trip. To be honest I think I may have been a little rusty striking too slowly for the nymph and too quickly on the dry. More practice needed!! Saw some hawthorn flies walking through the fields to the river but none while fishing. A few fish rising with three caught on LDO dry fly but the rest all took tungsten bead pheasant tail.

First trip out on club waters today. Golf course section of the Yeo. A few risers in very few places. Lost one early on near the railbridge. Nothing then until the milling co. Caught a 10" bt on a goldhead olive nymph and another to 7" bt below the bridge. Roll on spring.

Another two bt to the olive nymph this morning on the top section of the Creedy, 7" and 5". Four escapees. A few rises here and there but nothing to persuade me to put on a dry fly, least not in that wind today!

Had a chilly and windy outing on the Taw yesterday. Two small smolt from the very bottom pool. Three small ones dropped in quick succession from the run below the guage weir. All on nymphs. Quite quiet otherwise.

Great to hear you're seeing some mayfly too. How do you think the hatches of fly have been the last few weeks rubble?
Good choice of wading boots too!

Rubble is right ! GET ON IT !!! Had a hat full from the Yeo on sunday. Fish rising everywhere took six out of one pool without moving ! Fish were feeding realy hard infact their stomachs were bulging. Saw some mayflies, olives , hawthorns , medium olives but black gnats were the dominant species with most fish coming to one of Mike Weavers black gnat tyings but with CDC for the wing. Fantastic fishing the like of which i've not seen for years. If you can I would make some time to get out before the rain hits on thursday.

Pleased to hear it halfstoned, I've been seeing some great hatches and rising fish over on the Taw and am interested to hear if other anglers are witnessing the same on other rivers.

I've not been out much til now Pete. That is about to change however! Enjoyed my most productive visit to the Culm so far today. 7 fish to hand, 9" to 14" and a few lost too. Plenty hatching today, ne expert but looked.like medium sized olives, plenty of mayfly, caught some on grey wulff, some on comparadun, some on para adams. Might be out tomorrow, not sure where yet. Hi rubble, good to hear about the mayfly. Plenty of Yellow Mays today but that has been it as far as mayfly go. We have been having good hatches of olive uprights and from the moment I got on the river this morning the fish were rising. Good luck if you get out.

Great hatch of fly last night on the Otter with plenty of fish moving. Stayed on for a sea trout in lovely conditions but only had a couple of nudges. Two came right out the water ,both about1.5lb. There is an algal look to the deep water which may be putting them off the take. Still , early days. Colin.

Did the Taw yesterday. Cold stiff wind made things testing. Some decent 11 inchers with black gnats and para adams. Could not find a consistent fly to use though and at times not much happened. Some olives seen but no mays Attachments:
