rubble, sounds like the Taw on CFFC water is similar to me farther downstream, no mays just yet except the yellow ones. The wind was tricky wasn't it? We moved around and fished sheltered areas out of the wind.
Colin, no signs of sea trout where I am as yet but hearing about them a short distance downstream. Their appearance often coincides with the start of the mayfly hatch.

A quick hour and a half on thr Culm this morning only yielded one fish to a nymph. Missed the only riser with a black gnat. It really slashed at it but probably was.trying to drown it. Looks.like rain for the salmon fisherman tomorrow!

Always enjoy reading your posts Rubble , I wonder if you ever got round to fishing the East or West Okement ? I often fish up there and was wondering what other people made of it?

Snuck a brief hour mid afternoon on the Exe.
Normal spot interdicted by a shoal of frisky bullocks.
Went to a beat just above Bickleigh, where a tottery old man like me can get in but daren't move more than a few yards up or down (slippery rounded rocky bottom!)
What a lovely hour! Huge hatch of (I think) LDOs and smaller, browner alternatives. Rising fish. Not a huge number and most of the m out of range, but three medium sized ones succumbed. Just a joy to be there in the sunshine- but I wish I'd worn my neoprenes as the water was feeling- something someone as well insulated naturally as myself normally doesn't notice!

Thanks Halfstone. I did pay a.visit to the free.stretch of the west okement in Okehampton two seasons ago. Interesting fishing. Quite treacherous under foot, all off-camber slippy slate. Might try the stretch through the town one day as shown in Theo's excellent book. I have my suspicions that Pete made a visit to a river which I'd guess is the same one but above Meldon, written up in the latest eat sleep fish release. Am I right Pete?

Thanks for the reply Rubble. I think Pete may have fished the top of the Taw up at Belstone if memory serves. I havent fished through the town ( simmons park ) water but if you go further up the East Okement from where the duel carriage way crosses the river you can fish right up onto the moor. The area is popular with dog walkers but these are soon left behind as there are other paths which dont follow the river. Three years ago a friend and I fished up the West Okement above Meldon , if you dont mind the walk you can find one of the highest Oak forests in England at Black a Tor Copse, this was on BBC 1 "Secret Britain " strange twisted trees covered in moss and lichen, worth a look.Watch out for areas of bog and dont go in anything more than a gentle breeze!!! Very exposed up there!

Hi Rubble, halfstoned is correct and give the high street a go too. It is a little surreal walking down the high street in Okey in full fishing fishing gear but if Theo can get on a London bus dressed in waders Ithought it right I try.

That's a funny image... It's easy to forget how disconnected people can be from countryside style pursuits.... there'd be people in London who would have no idea what Theo was heading off to do.... No doubt people thought it was some new 'specialised party' wear

I think you give to much credit, to think there are people who don't know where eggs come from... Apart from the super market..... on that basis that if you were catching the bus it would still be in a rod tube they could just as easily think it's the new in thing to wear down the snooker hall!

Struggled on the Yeo today. Cold downstream wind, nothing rising , black gnats about but no upwinged flies seen, 3 fish caught on nymphs then went home! A week is a long time in fly fishing it seems!

Had a lovely early morning on the Yeo/Creedy early this morning. 8 or so fish on a small ptn below the junction. Hatches started around 9.30 and then it was dry fly all the way to the bridge. Para adams and para grey duster working equally well. Had six out of one small pool without moving my feet. All came from a very small patch which you might make out in the pic. Had about 25 in all in three hours. Back to work tomorrow. Boo. Light enough now for some evening action if the weather plays ball this week.

A nice way to spend a morning... Not sure the evenings will, play ball at the beginning of the week, depends on how bad the forecast showers are.... The end of the week sounds good

Glad to hear the Mayfly are appearing. Looks like the chap upstream has been stocking again, which is a shame. Did you knock that one on the head?

I'd recommend killing those in the future. They lend nothing to the river system ,competing with the wild fish, and lose condition very quickly, often getting so thin they die suffering. Not trying to knock your catch, or what you do with it, by the way, just making a suggestion. They're pretty tasty as well.
